I have looked forward to this day so very much. It's our chance to let you know just how loved you are and how proud we are to be your parents. Each day we are in awe of the person you're becoming and it makes us smile to know that we're playing a small part in that. I loved you the moment I saw you and I knew straight away that the angels had lead me to you.You were this tiny little bundle of absolute contentment, a wise soul who arrived on earth knowing their place and purpose.
Every day with you has been a privilege and a blessing. You have taught daddy and I so much about ourselves and taken us to warm and happy places we never knew existed. We asked for a baby and we got so much more. It was like God heard our prayers and hand-made a little girl just for us. You have dad's forehead (without a doubt), and my strange toes that dad likes to call sea urchins. You have my charm and grace, and it goes without saying, great dress sense. You have dad's kooky sense of humour as well as his sensitivity. You have his love for animals and you have been blessed with his ability to care about people and things from deep within your heart. As far as your temper tantrums and stubborn streak go, well that's a mystery to me. There's no way you got that from my side of the family.
Emma you're not our blood but you're our heart and have been from the very beginning. I don't think we could have made a baby more perfect than you and everyday I say a little thank you to your birth mother. We don't know a lot about her. We never met her but we saw her photo and found out a few things. We know she is Sotho and she lives in Johannesburg. She is clever and pretty and you have her eyes. We also know that she loves you very very much. Giving you to us was not easy for her, but she knew she wanted you to have a better life. I hope that she knows her gift to us is treasured and adored.
As much as you know your place in the world, there might come a time when people ask you why we're not the same colour as you. They might ask you where your 'real' mom and dad are. Emmy, you can let them know that because you're such a special little girl you got to choose your parents. And you chose us. You can tell them that there are very few people lucky enough to have two moms, two dads and eight grannies and grandpas. Because you are such a special soul you have a mom who brought into this world and another one who is helping you through it. You have aunts and uncles, cousins and god-parents, god-sisters and guardians. You are surrounded by people who care for you. And you are forever in the hearts of your other family.
You have allowed us to be a part of your life and given us the opportunity be a part of your adventure. We promise to look after you and always keep you safe. We might not be able to protect you from everything in this world but we hope that we give you all the love and security to always know where you come from and be confident in where you're going.
Emma you have taught us so many things in such a short time and for that we are forever grateful. We can only hope that our good is good enough to pass some of our wisdom onto you.
I think Winnie the Pooh says it best: "If ever there is tomorrow when we're not together.. there is something you must always remember. you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. but the most important thing is, even if we're apart.. I'll always be with you."
